About Me

My name is Daniel Jenkins. I am a software engineer currently with Nexus Innovations in Fargo, ND. I have many hobbies and activities that keep me busy in my spare time.

  • Programming (games, small applications)
  • Photography (landscape, wildlife, architecture, etc.)
  • Valve Source engine modding (maps, modeling, mods)
  • Graphics design (3d modeling, Photo editing, web/label graphics, and some video editing and DVD authoring)
  • Outdoor activities (Camping, hiking, fishing)
  • Working on lycanth.com.
  • Games (Orange Box, EQ2, Wii)

Software Use

There are many software packages that I find myself using a lot. Many of these are free, and highly recommended.

  • The Gimp - Very good graphics program. I can't understand spending several hundreds of dollars on Photoshop when the Gimp does everything that most people will ever need.
  • Blender - A free 3d modelling program. Has many great features, but sadly takes a bit of learning to be come proficient in.
  • Cygwin - Gives you a bash shell in Windows. What more could you want?
  • Visual Studio 2005/2008 - I use these for work and home programming projects. Microsoft now has standalone free versions of each individual compiler available. (C#, C++, etc.) They may not be as feature rich as the full thing, but have enough that most people would use.
  • Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 - This can be frustrating to use at times, but I often use it for editing videos and burning them onto DVDs. It's got lots of features, but sometimes feels a bit slow and buggy under Vista.
  • Valve Source SDK - I've been using this a lot lately for creating maps for Portal, TF2, and M-198: Source.
  • vim - Text editor for the command prompt. I spend much time editing pages under Linux and have gotten very comfortable in vim. Like Blender, it's got a steep learning curve, though. It's nearly useless until you learn all the shortcuts.
  • Textpad - Goes on all of my Windows PCs. Great text editor substitute to Notepad.
  • OpenOffice - As long as I'm mentioning text editors, I should include OpenOffice. I use that on my home computers in place of Microsoft Office. I don't use it a lot, but the database and spreadsheet apps definitely come in handy at times.

Programming Languages

While I can say I have worked with many different languages in the past, there are only a few that I currently use with any frequency.

  • C++ - Work, Source SDK, most of my side projects
  • C# - Work, and a couple of side projects like Sudoku and Minnesota Whist
  • DOS batch sripting - Been doing a lot with this for build scripts at work
  • bash scripting - Much nicer than DOS. I use this in Linux and cygwin scripts.
  • Perl - This is used in a lot of our build scripts
  • Python - Blender scripts. I've also been trying to use Python more for automating scripts that I may have used Perl for in the past
  • PHP - All my web sites are developed with PHP. Although the bulk of them are third-party packages, in the past I have done sites completely from scratch. I have also customized and created PHP plug-ins.

TODO

  • Tweak and add various Category:Templates
  • Add something more to the Main Page. But what?
  • Other pages?
  • Update projects to use free edition of VC++ 2008 and VC# 2008?
  • Examine web logs to see if I lost anything else that is commonly used. (Like scrnapp.zip, but is it worth the effort to update that?)
