I think I've turned my wife into a killer...

When I first got my wife to try EQ2 on the test server she said, "I like the quests, but I'm not so sure about the killing."

Last night, while trying to watch the Sopranos, she said "Hurry up and get in here to help me kill these Qeynosians!" I think her favorite thing to do in EQ2 right now is to patrol around the Commonlands looking for Qeynosians trying to prey on the weaker players. You should hear her cackle in glee as she one-shot kills greens with her master level nuke.

Looking at our stats, we finally got over 1 for our K/D ratio. My stats; My wife's stats. She's got more deaths than me because they tend to go after her when they realize she's a healer. She's gotten a few more kills because she's goes out without me at times when I'm at work, watching T.V. etc...

PvP in the Commonlands has become mostly a running game. Qeynosians always seem to run unless they outnumber you 4 to 1. The Commonlands is a big wide open area with lots of space to run. We once chased a guy for nearly 15-20 minutes before he finally zoned into Nektulus. I think he was using a speed hack because there is no way he should have been able to keep ahead of us the way he did. He stealthed a few times to try and lose us, and a couple of times we were able to land a snare on him.

My wife has a cat form that allows her to see stealth. I can see stealth when I am stealthed myself, but that drops all run buffs, so I often rely on her spotting them. One of my favorite abilities has been a throwing dagger move that knocks a runner down, giving my wife an extra second or two to cast a snare. Another favorite is tracking. I usually keep it up with it filtering only PCs to get a sense of who's in the area around us. Once I have someone locked on in tracking, they aren't getting away unless they zone. Escape is another nice skill of mine. I can use it to teleport the entire group to a "safe spot." In Nek, that is at the zone to the Commonlands, and in the Commonlands that is the West Freeport gates. It can be cast while in combat, so when we run into a group that is way too big to handle, I can save us all. Usually I try to make a fight of it first because I hate being a runner. :)

I think SOE needs to rethink the whole in/out of combat code. Lots of times you get locked in combat mode until you zone. Sometimes killing a mob helps, sometimes it doesn't. When you are in combat mode all speed buffs are suspended and your power/health regenerate very slowly, so getting locked into it gets very annoying.

Supposedly, SOE added some code that tells you where someone flees too when they zone. That doesn't seem to be working very well, though. There have been a number of times I've been on top of someone attacking them when they zone and no message appears. Since there are often 3-4 instances of the Commonlands and sometimes 2+ instances of the zones adjacent to it, it becomes a guessing game where they zoned too. If you zone while in combat, you can't zone again for 30 seconds. I'm thinking the problem I am seeing is related to when they determine if you are in/out of combat... e.g. I hit them, they didn't hit me so they aren't in combat mode, thus no message to me, and no zoning restrictions.

There also appear to be some bugs with mentoring. When you are in combat, you are not supposed to be able to unmentor. I was once attacking a level 24 that suddenly became a level 35, though. I'm guessing that this is again related to how it is determined if you are in/out of combat.

The taunt/detaunt stuff that they added really changes the dynamics a lot. Your target can be switched to someone else with a taunt, and you can lose a target completely with a detaunt. I need to get into the habit of using my taunt and detaunts more myself. It's disruptive to the attacker because it can take a bit to try and refocus on targetting your target. I have an extra mouse button bound to "target last," but it seems like that doesn't aways work right away. I think they built in a delay where you can't re-target your old target again for a couple seconds or so with that.
