I was going to write up a review on this Thai restaurant yesterday, but I figured that to really do it justice, I should wait until I visited there again so it was fresh in my memory. It is just down the street a few blocks from our apartment, so we decided to go there for lunch again today. I now have the burning spiciness of the food in my mouth as I sit and type this.
The first time we went to Krung Thai, I had the Neua Kra-Praw (beef basil with chili garlic), and my wife had the Beef Garlic Pepper. Today, I had the Gai Gra Pao (basil chicken with chili and garlic) and my wife again had the Beef Garlic Pepper. Most of the names on the menu I wouldn't want to try and pronounce, though most of them have a 1 line description in English that gives you some idea of what you are ordering. Several of the items on the menu have a small pepper next to them indicating that you can order the dish as mild, medium, or hot.
The items we ordered came in saucers filled with the meat and sauces, which you spooned onto a plate that was placed at your table upon sitting down. The meal was also accompanied by a big pot of steamed rice.
On my first visit, I went with a medium spiciness level. I tend to think that I can handle spicy food pretty well. I do know people who like things even spicier than myself, but generally I like a good bit of spiciness. My mouth was a burning inferno by the time we finished this meal, though. I had to heap spoonfuls of steamed rice on top to try and cool it down. Despite being very spicy, it was still very tasty. Because of our experiences last time, today I decided to go with mild. I was a bit worried that it would be too mild, but I needn't have been. It was still quite spicy, but not in such an overpowering way.
My wife's Beef Garlic Pepper was one of the dishes without a spiciness indicator and was quite mild. I found myself snatching bits and pieces of it though as it was very tasty. It looked like big chunks of garlic had been deep fried along with the small pieces of beef. It was very good.
The atmosphere of the place was nice, though when we went today it was pretty busy and felt a bit crowded. The people there seemed very friendly and our food came less than 10 minutes after we ordered.
My only real complaint with the place is that they serve cans of pop with a glass of ice. I would much prefer fountain pop with free refills; especially when eating spicy food. Other than that, we will most likely be going back for more good meals there.
